Eating Wild - Spruce Bud Tips

Rarely had colds or headaches and stomach as a child. It was an act of self defense because My father had a home remedy for any ailment. One of the most unpleasant and, accordingly, with effect, was his one-two-three drill cough, congestion or cold.

Your first line of attack was a result of Seneca, chewed. I could have been the poster boy of Buckley's cough syrup. Tasted horrible, but it worked! For a deep-seated cough, the doctor prescribed a mustard poultice father, mixed with dried banana leaves applied to the chest. Mustard is the real thing not some wimpy national mustard with seeds ground fine and boiled into a paste. . It stung and left a red rash lasting applying the poultice But they also seemed to work its magic in a day or third thrust his offensive against colds. - More preventive than curative - was fir tea sprouts.

The phrase, "fir shoots" sounds almost gentle and friendly. But how many of us have seen fir flowers, so that, in fact, fir "buds" is clearly a misnomer. Outbreaks of spruce are the tips of pine branches that emerge in spring, a slightly bluish color compared with the medium green needles more. In theory, the sprouts are soft. Fortunately, because in a matter of weeks after the last of the snow, needles are hard enough for adults solid for suturing a deep cut!

Fir needles are exceptionally rich in vitamin C. The natives of North America were aware of it and often gathered spruce and other conifer needles to boil as tea. The fir is a valuable source of winter food, even in middle and high latitudes of the Canadian prairies and northern Ontario. It is a testament to the resilience and strength of our founders in North America!

But Dad knew how to spruce tips acceptable in many ways. (He just chose not to, when you provide a cold "remedy." His belief was that if the cure is more unpleasant than the disease, secure one's body to learn to reject a cold to avoid having to accept a cure. It was his own aversion therapy.)

Spruce tips you can do in a acceptable level, if not rich area, with nothing more than a few sweeteners. The bitter taste of citrus fruit has the flavor of green tea with a small grapefruit flavor.

As a kind of wild game, there's nothing quite like spruce needles. Use them as you would rosemary (another evergreen) of venison, chicken and meat Moose, a generous rubbing of hands on the surface of the meat, along with cranberries and saskatoons crushed or dried morels. You will not find better in any restaurant.

Even more attractive is preserved spruce tips. Mix 2 cups of needles with a cup of granulated sugar, and bake on a cookie sheet or oven to 225-250 degrees for 45 minutes, or cook in the pot over a double boiler. carry with you on a winter hike for energy and nutrition.

Although spring is the best time to harvest and eat spruce tips, needles of conifers can provide emergency food in all seasons and a burlap coat for sleeping bag when camping outdoors throughout the year, or as a great fire starter.
