Subterranean Homesick Blues

References and allusions
"Subterranean Homesick Blues" was in fact a special amalgam of three-way Jack Kerouac, the Guthrie Pete Seeger song "Taking It Easy" ("Mother was in the kitchen preparing to eat / sis was in the pantry in search of a little yeast ") and riffed rock and roll poetry in motion" Chuck Berry is too Monkey Business. "
While Dylan was not a member of the circles to improve the original of the 1950s, Kerouac's Underground, a novel published in 1958 on the Beat Generation, has been cited as a possible inspiration for the title the song. Stretching further back, the title refers to the Underworld, a novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky, whose works were popular with beat writers as as Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. [Citation needed]
first line of the song is a reference to distillation codeine and politics of the time: "Johnny is in the basement Mixing up the medicine / I'm on the pavement thinking about the government. "The song also shows some of the growing conflicts between" right "or" square "(workers 40 hours) and the new 1960 counterculture. The widespread use of recreational drugs, and the confusion surrounding the Vietnam War were beginning to take over the nation, and Dylan Lyrics hyperkinetic were dense with allusions up-to-the-minute important in pop culture Youth 1960. According to rock journalist Andy Gill, "an entire generation recognized the zeitgeist in the verbal whirlwind of 'Subterranean Homesick Blues."
The song also refers to the struggles around the U.S. civil rights movement ("Better stay away from those / That carry around a fire hose.") (During the civil rights movement, peaceful demonstrators were beaten and sprayed with high pressure hoses, fire). Despite the political nature of the lyrics, the song went on to become the first Top 40 of Dylan in the United States.
Influence
Listed by Rolling Stone magazine as the 332nd "Greatest Song of all time, "" Subterranean Homesick Blues "has been widely influential, giving rise to iconic references to artists and non artists alike. The most famous letter "does not need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows" was the inspiration for the name of the radical left American group the Weathermen, a splinter group of Students for a Democratic Society. John Lennon was sent to find the song as "fascinating" he did not know what it would be able to write a song that could "compete" with him. The firehose group (former members of the Minutemen) took the name of another enigmatic warnings of the song "Better stay away from those with a fire hose ..." In addition, the opening of the last stanza: "Ah born, keep" hot, if the Australian rock band Jet garage with the title of his debut album Get Born.

Besides the influence of the song in the music, the song was used in what became one of the first "modern" clips of the movie promotion, the precursor of what later became known as the music video. Although Rolling Stone magazine ranked it seventh in the October 1993 magazine list of "Top 100 Music Videos", the original clip was actually the opening segment of DA Pennebaker's film, Do not Look Back, a documentary about Bob Dylan 1965 tour of England. In the film, Dylan, who came up with the idea, says the reference cards for the public, with words and phrases selected from the letter. The reference letters were written by Donovan, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Neuwirth and Dylan himself. While staring at the camera, it flips the cards as the song plays. There are intentional misspellings and puns throughout the clip, for example, when the song lyrics say "eleven dollar bills" the sign says "$ 20 bills." The clip was filmed in an alley behind the Savoy Hotel in London, where Ginsberg and Neuwirth make a cameo in the background. For its use as a trailer, the following text overlaps the end of the clip as Dylan and Ginsberg is beyond the scope: "This coating Pronto | Bob Dylan | Do not look ago by Mr. DA Pennebaker. "Thanks to the rear of the Hotel Savoy retains much outside as in 1965, the alley used in the video stream has been identified as the Savoy steps.
In addition to the clip of Savoy Hotel, two promotional films of alternates were shot, one in a park where Dylan, Neuwirth and Ginsberg are joined by a subpoena man [fourth needed], and another shot on the roof of an unknown building (possibly the Hotel Savoy). A montage of clips can be seen in the documentary No Direction Home.
