The Marquesas Islands are a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean located in French Polynesia. The Marquesas are believed to have been settled by Polynesians more than two thousand years ago, probably from the islands of Tonga and Samoa. Contact with Europeans for the first time in 1595 when a Spanish explorer gave the island its present name. France took the group in 1842.

Since the mid-nineteenth century, the Marquesas Islands have been severely affected by Western diseases, especially smallpox, causing the population decline of about 100,000 in the sixteenth century to only 20,000 of the 1870 and 2000 only in the twentieth century began.
