Do you need to worry about BPA in plastic bottles?

A recent study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association requires to wonder whether the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in plastic bottles, cans and containers of different foods, as well as all those green reusable bottles water all carry around.

Based on a health survey, the study found that those with higher amounts of BPA in their urine were more likely to report having heart disease and diabetes. Of course, the research presents no information that says that BPA causes these conditions and the study's authors agree they can not rule out the possibility that people who already have heart disease or diabetes are more vulnerable to having BPA appear in their samples.

True to form, NBC's Today Show, issued a report earlier this year, which ignores the facts and highlighted the danger of fear - millions of us are worrying unnecessarily we fed our children in plastic baby bottles and sippy cups, I've tried to not add to pollution in the world by switching to bottled water re-usable.

The story we had delivering our plastic containers in search of numbers (resin ID code # 3, # 6 and # 7) is that they have nothing to do with a product that is made of BPA, the chemical bad boy of the piece.

Consumer Alert (erroneously) said:

- There is no safe level of BPA, when in fact the chemical has been studied for many years and has proven to be safe, especially considering levels that we eat are thousands of times lower than the rats that have been studied.

- Plastics containing BPA are not safe in the microwave, however, a Dutch study that focused on the migration of BPA after microwaving found no evidence of that.

- Codes at the bottom a container can say is safe. Wrong! These resin identification codes used to help recycling facilities, and have nothing to do with identify bottles that have BPA. The topics to be used for food must pass tough FDA guidelines before they ever allowed on the market.

All this goes against 40 years of science, according to a statement issued by the American Chemistry Council a few days after the segment came out today air. Another thoughtful piece by Gilbert Ross, MD of the American Council on Science and Health (who also appeared briefly in the report) came out and said today's report as it is - junk science. "

Not only that, the guest in the study, Dr. Leo Trasande of Mount Sinai Medical Center was sufficient time for six segment long minutes to communicate your message, while Dr. Ross was only 6 seconds to tell viewers that "Toxic effects are in rats were performed on thousands of times that we are exposed to the environment. "

Not so "fair and balanced" is now?

The media mis-information is presented as the result of a report by the National Toxicology Program which was tracking a panel of experts review completed in 2007. Both the Panel and NTP concluded similar reports a low risk of change or an insignificant concern for adults and some concern by infants and children.

"This is the third lowest rank in the scale of five levels of NTP. However, the media has manipulated findings by suggesting a new direction is being given by NTP on the use of BPA. This is not accurate, "says Sharon Kneiss, vice president of the division of products of the American Chemistry Council (ACC).

Until the science is settled, there is no way to know if you are using a bottle is made with BPA. If you are especially concerned, you might want to avoid the heat or microwave food or beverages in plastic containers until further investigation into the leak of chemical can be completed.

Meantime, the FDA is taking a second group of scientist to deliver an opinion on the safety of BPA in plastic bottles and other containers, although the agency has confidence in his own research, more comprehensive and carefully designed studies in humans that seem to cause any concern.
