Social networks could damage your job search if you let

Social networking sites are fun and can be a great asset to your job hunt. Sites like LinkedIn are designed for professional networking can be a very important part of your job search strategy. Indeed, monitoring This article summarizes exactly how useful sites like LinkedIn may be in a job search and how to get the most out of them. But what with the rest of the social networking stratosphere? What about sites like MySpace and Facebook to name just two of many that are out there.

Positive:

You can keep in touch with your friends. They are places to express yourself and share your creative side.

The possible downside:

More and more companies are using social networking sites as part of your interview and background check the process and are often the content of these sites will ultimately change their minds about offering someone a job.

The concept of social networking is great, but because they have little control over who sees your profile - even if you set your profile as private - you still need to be aware of exactly what you put out for the world to see.

Set your privacy settings to "Friends Only"

For those of you who have not taken this step yet - hit it. Most people leave the position of the public, but if you are in job search, this is the first precaution to take.

On Facebook, there are many options of how you can limit the information to other people to see, so take advantage of it. In some cases, if you choose a network as a big city and not limit their choices, everyone in that network can see your information by default. On the other hand, you can limit that only their friends. You can limit the particular information, such as applications you added, Wall posts or photos that have been tagged, as soon as what another person can not see at all. Privacy settings can be found many in the "account" to log in.

The default setting in MySpace is public. Go to your homepage and click Account Settings. Change the setting to "Only friends." If you are saying to yourself, "But I traced the privacy settings so that only my friends can see my profile so this is not relevant to me. "Not so fast! An article by Kevin Gray on www.jobweb.com told a true story of a person who almost loses a job because the company was interviewing with a state agency and was able to access your "private" profile under the Patriot Act. That is why the steps in the rest of this article are also very important in protecting your job search.

Invite Only
their true friends in your network
MySpace's own website states that people are not always who they seem. While this advice is especially important in the field of child safety on the Internet, is also relevant to your job search. You do not want to open their profile to people who do not know.

Blocking Users

If you decide to block a user for any reason, just keep in mind that a blocked user can not even view your profile or see you in the search results on Facebook, but can still see his profile on MySpace, but they can not contact you. Is a significant difference if you are trying to block a potential employer.

Limit personal information during the installation
By creating your profile on MySpace, they are able to share a large amount of personal information about yourself, such as sexual orientation, relationship status, ethnicity, body type, religion, occupation and income. Facebook allows you to display their sex, marital status and date of birth. Note that a potential employer can view this information. The company must make a decision on the basis of their qualifications and not any of the above. It is best to keep it out of the job search process to limit what the publish. You can also go back and remove or hide as the head in the job search.

Friend only

"Friend only Comments Blog ": If you only want people you know to be able to post comments on your blog or MySpace profile, it is important that you review this option under Account Settings.

"Friend Only Group Invites": Unfortunately, MySpace groups are used to send adult content and innocent people are being invited to these groups to increase the count of members of the group. If you want to be invited in groups by his friends, check this option.

Other important settings

"Approve Comments before publishing": this function allows you to have control over what other people post on your page. Without it, anyone can write what you want on your page without you knowing it before of time. Sometimes friends can write things that may sound funny, but not necessarily want an employer to consider as approved by you. You can reject any comment that it considers inappropriate for what you want there in your presence online.

"No Transmission Pic":
This is a way to prevent people sending links to your images with others you do not know on MySpace. And even if you do not want people who do not know to see your pictures, you should also consider the appropriateness of the photos you send to get started. Think about what photos are acceptable to be seen by a potential employer and use that as a guide as to what you write.

Precautions

Become familiar with phishing scams and how to avoid them. If you ever e-mailed appears to have been born in your social networking site, make sure it is legitimate before agreeing to a fake site. Entry information can be captured and explicit or unwanted content can be placed on your page.

Message for the long term
Sites like MySpace and Facebook are inherently about creativity and self-expression. But do not let that fool you. An employer does not have to take a picture proudly displaying his 10 tattoos, something that would be comfortable especially if you are being considered for a position with the client. Do not post for the "now" - Think about your future. Will you be looking for a job at some point? Will you be entering a conservative industry? A picture of you drunk at a fraternity house can be fun with your friends at 19 years, but may hurt your job search in a conservative law firm at age 25.

Take these precautions and your job search will stronger for it. And remember that while there is potential for upward social networking sites for job search, there is also a huge mouth.
